• Onion- 5 medium(,quartered)
  • Red chillies- 4
  • Tamarind pulp-  2 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder- a pinch
  • Oil-  1 teaspoon
  • Mustard seeds- 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds-  1/2 teaspoon
  • Chana dal-  1/2 teaspoon
  • Dhuli urad dal-   1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt as per taste


  1. Take a mixer jar and add onions, red chillies,tamarind pulp, salt, turmeric powder and grind to a coarse paste.
  2. Transfer this mixture in a bowl.
  3. Heat oil in a non-stick pan, add mustard seeds and cumin seeds,when they starts spluttering add chana dal,urad dal and saute till they turn light brown in color.
  4. Add the tempering to the onion mixture and mix well.
  5. Serve with Dosas, Idli.
