South Indian Coconut Chutney Recipe For Masala Dosa and Idli

South Indian Coconut Chutney is a must-have accompaniment for south Indian dishes like dosa idli and vada. It is a simple recipe made out of coconut and has all the goodness and health benefits of coconut.

  • 2 cups Grated Coconut
  • 4 tbsp Fried Gram Dal
  • 4 nos Green Chilli
  • 6 nos Small Onion
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as per requirement

To Temper:

  • 2 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 2 tsp Urad Dal
  • 2 nos Dry Red Chilli
  • 12 nos Curry Leaves
  • 4 tsp Oil


  • Grind coconut along with chili, fried gram dal, green chili, small onion, salt and little water.
  • If you want you can add water after grinding to make it lose or thick chutney as per your preference.
  • Now heat oil in a small pan.
  • Once the oil is hot add mustard seeds to it.
  • Once the seeds start spluttering add curry leaves, whole red chili and urad dal.
  • Fry till the curry leaves become crisp and the red chili changes color.
  • Switch off the flame and immediately pour the tempering on the coconut chutney.
  • Mix everything well.
  • Serve coconut chutney along with idli, dosa, masala dosa, vada, upma or pongal.
