Alsi Laddoo

About Alsi Laddoo (Tisi Laddoo):

Winters in our home had their own fragrance, slow cooking, warm sunlight, and those small rituals that only Maa understood.

My father was a lawyer who loved farming. Along with all his work, he would grow tisi in our own fields.

Back then, none of us knew that tisi was a “superfood.” It was just something we grew easily…

something we kept, something we shared with relatives, and something Maa quietly added to our food.

She would roast tisi and grind it into a fine powder, keeping it in a small steel dabba near the masala box.

And every time we ate dal-chawal, she would sprinkle a spoonful on top,

“ये ताक़त है, आदत बना लो,” she would say.

Her winter recipes were simple… tisi paratha, tisi pitha, and of course, these warm, fragrant alsi laddoo.

Now when I make tisi laddoo at home, it feels like those childhood winters return with the fragrance of roasted flaxseeds, the sweetness of melting jaggery, and the comforting warmth of a mother’s hands.

Serving Suggestion for this Healthy Winter Sweets:

Eat one alsi laddoo in the morning for warmth and strength.

Enjoy it with warm milk or as a snack.

Pack them in lunchboxes during winter.

Storage Suggestion for Flax seed Laddoo:

Store in airtight containers.

Lasts for a moth at room temperature.

Pro Tips to Make Perfect Jaggery Flaxseed Ladoo:

Roast flaxseeds on low heat to enhance flavour.

Do not overheat jaggery; it should melt gently.

Adjust ghee depending on how soft you want the laddoos.

Add sesame seeds or peanuts for extra crunch and warmth.

Tisi Laddoo

Basic Ingredients Used to Make this Recipe:

Even though alsi laddoo is made with just a few ingredients, each one brings its own warmth, strength, and flavour to this winter recipe.

Here’s a simple look at why these ingredients matter and how they help turn this tisi laddoo into one of the best healthy winter sweets to make at home:

Flaxseeds (Alsi / Tisi): Flaxseeds are the heart of this laddoo. They are naturally warm in nature and rich in omega-3, fibre, and iron, perfect for the winter season.

When roasted, alsi becomes nutty and fragrant, and gives the laddoos their earthy taste.

They also help with digestion, immunity, and overall strength, which is why alsi is considered a winter superfood.

Jaggery (Gud): Jaggery is what binds these flaxseed laddoos together, but more than that, it brings warmth and natural sweetness. It is rich in minerals and is easier to digest than sugar.

In winter, jaggery helps keep the body warm, supports immunity, and gives instant energy.

It also adds that deep, comforting flavour that makes these laddoos taste like home.

Ghee: Ghee is essential in any traditional winter sweet. It keeps the body warm, supports digestion, and gives these laddoos their soft, melt-in-the-mouth texture.

The light aroma of ghee blends perfectly with roasted tisi and jaggery, making the laddoos rich and satisfying.

Makhana: Makhana adds crunch and strength to this recipe. It is rich in calcium, protein, and healthy carbs, making the laddoos more filling and nutritious.

Roasted makhana also gives a light, pleasant texture that balances the softness of jaggery and flaxseeds.

Almonds & Cashews: Dry fruits naturally belong to winter. Almonds and cashews add healthy fats, protein, and a nice crunch to these jaggery flaxseed ladoos.

They also make the laddoos more energizing, especially for kids, elders, and anyone needing extra warmth in the cold months.

Raisins: Raisins add a mild sweetness and help keep the laddoos moist. They also provide iron and natural antioxidants, making the laddoos healthier and easier to digest.

Cardamom Powder: Cardamom is optional, but just a pinch brings a beautiful fragrance to the laddoos. It balances the earthy flavour of tisi and enhances the aroma of jaggery and ghee.

Cardamom also supports digestion, which is helpful in winter.

Grind makhana and nuts coarsely for the best texture
Adjust the amount of jaggery based on your sweetness preference
Store the laddoos in an airtight container to keep them fresh
Refrigerate if storing for more than 2–3 weeks
Use soft jaggery for better binding and flavour

For making alsi laddoo, a good mixer grinder makes a big difference, because, makhana, and dry fruits need to be ground coarsely and evenly.

I use and recommend a mixer grinder that is strong enough for everyday Indian cooking, especially for recipes like this where roasting and grinding are key steps.

I only recommend products I’ve personally used or truly believe in for home cooking.
