Health Benefits of Eating Poha

Poha/ chura/ chivda/ aval/ chuda/ flattened rice flakes is actually the rice which is flattened into flat, light, dry flakes originating from the Indian subcontinent. Rice is parboiled before flattening so that it can be consumed with very little to no cooking.

Poha keeps you full for a long time and it has lot of health benefits. It is a rich source of iron, preventing anaemia or, iron deficiency in the body. It is low on gluten and helps in controlling blood sugar levels, making it an ideal food option for diabetics.

Basic Ingredients used for this recipe

Poha or Aval: There are 3 basic kinds of poha available in the market. Paper aval, medium aval or thick aval. You can use any kind of poha, depending on the availability.

Jaggery – I preferebly use organic jaggery to make caramel poha recipe. So I would suggest you also to do the same. Just to avoid dirt in it.

Sesame Seeds – I have used some sesame seeds here as it enhances the taste.

Ginger – Ginger can be added for extra flavor, addition of ginger is completely optional, personally I like the taste of ginger in it, but my daughter is completely opposite to me. Ginger is something she doesn’t like at all.

  • Keep it stirring continuously on a medium flame until jaggery gets thick and sticky.
  • You can test it by dropping thickened syrup drop in cold water in a bowl. If you could make a small ball out of it, or it hardens up, without getting diluted with water, the jaggery has reached the correct consistency.
  • Now add roasted poha and roasted til and constantly stir well until the poha and til gets mixed with jaggery.
